Bipolar personality disorder
By: Menna Zain
Today’s subject will be about bipolar personality disorder or manic depressive psychosis…
How possibly can you deduce the psychological definition from this upper label according to your individual perspective?
Yes, correct, we were all formerly educated that a magnet has two poles one is negative and one is positive as well as the magnet has a field, a region around it which allows the magnetic force to be spread through this extent hence attract any close object and stick it due to the specific power it has and this power is relative.
This law can be also applied in its formula on human beings, as we claim the magnet to represent the mood and the field is the environmental conditions which probably impact on the person general mode, if it was clean from toxicity it will permit a man to be stable and ready to interact, if not it makes him suffer deeply and finding it difficult to cope or adapt…
So yes our main topic here is the “mood”
And how is the bipolar disorder is highly connected to it.
We all admit that we often suffer from mood swings, but a bipolar struggle is much more long and overwhelming…
So let me take you in an adventure and present you briefly three types of bipolar personality disorder as scientifically divided:
1. Unipolar
Here a person feel joy, totally in a bad way, sensing hyperactivity, moves a lot, talks fast, feels active and productive likewise, ready to finish everything before the deadlines and throwing out some impressive insights during the meetings, therefore, all the clients will give such a good feedback as well as the coworkers will do praise the efforts exerted but they will also complain about the weird attitude of that presenter…
Hence a person will eventually lose all these potentials in a short period and start feeling down and let’s give you a simple metaphor; representing in a balloon you keep whiffing in until it’s enough (normal limit of joy) then you press (hyperactivity), so the result will be not good as predicted, yes the balloon will explode (causing a person to feel depressed and lazy) and this takes place in one term without a rest, that’s when we call it a “unipolar” or stage one of bipolar personality disorder. (Joy> depression) more of rambunctiousness.
2. Second stage is “Hypomania”
We previously mentioned above that the joy amount and hyperactivity were high, but here is totally the opposite, a person feels depressed most of times, and hyper for a short period, and frequently having anxiety attacks and suicidal thoughts (mutual matter in all three stages)
So our inequality’s shape here is (depression> joy)
3. Third stage is a combination of the last two stages and labelled as “Rapid cycling”
Here we can only say that there’s an equation
(depression and joy are alike, happening regularly without interruption)
that’s when we call the patient a bipolar, because he constantly struggles and feel uncomfortable, changing all the day and not able to take any decision, or event detect a purpose.
The suffering here is not ordinary because it consumes a person energy and burns down all his plans due to harsh symptoms attached to this type of mental illness.
It’s like a maze they get themselves into.
And for the record, a person with cyclothymia is quite divergent than a bipolar, but why?
Because the person with cyclothymia suffers from mood swings but it can be expanded and relatively not as difficult as bipolar mood swings which are quite violent and happening in short periods.
Before we got to the symptoms point, let’s wind back the clock and see the possible reasons why a person suffers from bipolar personality disorder:
1. Whether it was genetic
2. Or there are some spots of brain which are not working their best, therefore the mood changes a lot, due to serotonin, remember it? It’s a hormone and neuronal transmitter, released regularly to make a person feels calm, that’s when it happens in a typical brain not a collapsing one, by the way most of mental diseases are influenced by the serotonin, if it’s higher than a normal edge, it causes hyperactivity (unipolar, for example)
When it’s less, it causes depression, anxiety and laziness so the psychiatrists give their patients a medicine to average the amount of the serotonin in the brain.
3. Third condition is represented in life stressful situations or traumatizing events, which make a person suffers from bad health circumstances.
4. Physical diseases, put in consideration that both physical and psychological issues are insanely connected to each other.
Now, it’s time to spot the light over the symptoms…
And we should know that there are 4 axes included:
(mental, emotional, behavioral and physical)
Mental: how a person thinks
Emotional: how a person feels
Behavioral: how a person acts according to what he feels and thinks
Can be oral or practical
Physical: only practical, that’s when a person starts to move according to what he feels and thinks
After clarifying such an important thing like that, let’s attach all of these elements to each separate stage mentioned above:
First of all, unipolar “first stage”: –
(mental properties):
– remember when all the members of meeting were clapping for the presenter? That’s interpreting that the bipolar is quite efficient at that moment he gave them insights couldn’t been better.
(high intellectual efficiency)
– If you were on a call with a bipolar you would literally get lost among the topics you both discussing because a bipolar can’t settle.
– Auditory hallucinations
(Emotional properties of a unipolar):
– Joy and enthusiasm
– Over exaggerating
– Doesn’t accept critical comments
– Thinks deeply that his value is quite necessary in people’s lives and that they have a remarkable role but they are not, because person’s life isn’t based on another and nothing can disable a person from pursuing their objectives.
So your ex is not sobbing there in a corner waiting for a text message… he’s ruling his business currently and preparing for a flight.
(Physical properties):
– Hyperactivity represented in body quick movements and speaking fast
– Finds it hard to sleep
– High sex drive
(Behavioral properties):
– Selects hard tasks to do in a moment of activity and enthusiasm while he’s actually not capable to finish what he initiated.
– Recklessness
– Far away from discipline
Now after we mentioned the four axes of the first stage, we directly head to the second stage:
“Hypomania”
(Emotional properties):
– Sadness
– Losing passion and interest
– Low self esteem
– Despair
– Disable to do a single activity even if it looked easy
– Suicidal thoughts
– Agitation
(Mental properties):
– Not able to focus
– Not able to take decisions whether they were simple or otherwise
(Physical properties):
1- Eating disorders
2- Sleeping disorders
3- Chronic tiredness
4- Constipation
5- Low sex drive
(behavioral properties):
1- Always bored and not capable to finish or start a task due to having lack of energy
2- Drama queen
3- Self-isolation
Forgot something? Yes, the third stage, but I think you can easily figure it out, can’t you?
Medical treatment:
Will be represented in:
1- Cognitive behavioral therapy
2- Medicines; such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety
One last thing before I finish my article, please don’t relate yourself to any of these symptoms, it takes a long time till a person get diagnosed, so you better take care of the people around you, and if you have any doubts either advice one to go for a therapy session or you go yourself if you are not feeling okay, I’ll always motivate you for such a good step like this to be taken. Make your mind and stay safe.
